Maintenance Problem for 49 Families in IDP Compact Settlement is Resolved

Ketevan has been living in an IDP compact settlement, N27 Ana Politkovskaia Street, in Tbilisi, since 2012. She was concerned that the roof of her building was leaking when it rained and damaging the apartments. The IDP tenants were complaining about the problem and knew they had to establish an HOA to obtain financing for repairs. As an active member of her IDP community, Ketevan took the initiative to approach LAG for legal assistance to establish an HOA for her building. LAG provided legal counseling so Ketevan could prepare the necessary documents for HOA registration with the relevant government offices. As the head of the HOA, she managed to obtain financing to repair the leaky roof.

There is more work to be done to further improve the living conditions of Ketevan`s IDP compact settlement. The common areas need to be privatized to allow for necessary repairs and enhancements to the building. LAG is working hand in hand with Ketevan and her neighbors to assist with solving the similar and other types of legal issues.

LAG has been working with the families in Ketevan`s and number of other IDP compact settlement to raise awareness of their rights and provide legal counseling as part of the Free Legal Aid for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Georgia project since 2014. This project is funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the overall goal of facilitating access to durable solutions for IDPs.
